Verification Proves What You Can Actually Do!
Different Types of Online Teacher
There are many kinds of online teachers. Here are 5 broad categories — and you can probably think of more.
-
Non-native speakers who speak poorly but still want to teach English as a career.
-
Non-native speakers with adequate to excellent English, pursuing teaching as a career.
-
Proficient speakers (native or non-native) who understand English very well and are capable of holding an online teaching job.
-
English speakers with TEFL or equivalent training, who understand grammar and use the techniques learned to teach online.
-
Teachers who combine proficiency with practice, applying TEFL (or equivalent) methods, trained and supervised in class situations, and able to refine those skills through experience.
👉 If you were a student, would you be satisfied with Category 1, when teachers in Category 5 may be available at the same cost and conditions?
Knowledge vs Skills
A TEFL or similar course gives you knowledge — information and theory from books, lectures, or online modules.
But knowledge is only step one. To be a real teacher you need skills — applied knowledge, practiced in real teaching situations.
Think of it like sport: you can read the rules and watch videos, but until you play and practice, you’re only knowledgeable, not skilled.
Why Verification Matters
That’s why we don’t stop at certificates. Verification focuses on ability.
It doesn’t matter whether you learned from a TEFL course, a degree, or years of experience — what matters is:
-
Can you guide structured lessons?
-
Can you solve grammar issues?
-
Can you keep students progressing?
If yes, you can earn a Verified Badge (A1–D1) that proves what you can actually do.
For Students
When you see the Verified Badge on a teacher’s listing, you know they’ve been assessed, assigned a level, and proven capable of teaching or overseeing at that level.
If no badge is shown, they may only be offering conversation without proven teaching ability.
A lot can be said about online teachers. So many are now getting into this lucrative career. Many are regretfully hugely unqualified of course, and are being used by Thai students who are unaware of the teacher's lack of qualifications and skills.
Fortunately most online teachers in Thailand are reputable people, who've taken the time to receive training via an TEFL or similar course.
ESL/EFL/TEFL (etc.) training is not enough in itself however to make a teacher really qualified. When you go through a TEFL course book - whether online or offline - you can gain a lot of knowledge. Knowledge is information. It's acquired through sensory input: reading, watching and listening. Knowledge refers to factual information and theoretical concepts.
That’s step one in teacher training. But new teachers need more. They still need teaching skills.Skills refer to applied knowledge to specific situations. Skills are developed through practice.
Putting it simply, knowledge is theoretical and skills are practical.
AN ANALOGY: You can know all the rules of a sport, know its key procedures and techniques and when to use them, but this only makes you knowledgeable about the sport; it does not make you any good at it. To become good at a sport you must play it, practice its techniques - and improve your skills through practice.
A would-be qualified teacher has to practice, this is where knowledge is transformed into teaching skills.
